A safety program for all 950 employees of the trucking company's two divisions commenced with the mailing to their homes of a calendar/safety poster. This featured the slogan "365 chances to work safely. Our banner year, let's go for it!" Each month of the calendar revealed a safety award. These included a deck of playing cards with safety messages on each card, a thermochromic coffee mug that magically read "Work Safely" when hot liquid was poured into it, a jacket and an embroidered quilt vest. In order to qualify for these awards, employees had to complete a safety survey - a brief questionnaire to which was attached a key tag (copy: "People are the Key to Safety"). They also had to work continuous days without a reportable accident. Employees were requested to affix a "Safety First. We Care." label on inter-office correspondence. Division safety committee
members received jackets and caps. The promotion helped reduce personal injuries 15.4 percent in one division, 28.4 percent in the other. Nearly 800 of the 950 employees worked an entire year without a reportable personal injury, resulting in estimated net savings of $427,000, according to the safety director.
