A steel producer wished to reduce energy use by 331
billion BTUs. The energy-conservation program was
kicked off by an article in the employee newspaper. At
the same time, employees were issued decals imprinted
"We're saving energy" for their hard hats. A
slogan-of-the-month contest was held, and the winner
received $25 gift certificates. The winners' picture
and slogan were featured on plant posters and in the
company newspaper. Three months into the program,
management distributed magnetic noteholders as a
reminder to stay involved in the program. Departments
were singled out each month for their conservation
efforts, and employees in these departments were also
eligible for a drawing in which the prize was to be a
free energy audit of the winner's home and a $1,000
cash award. Employees in the department that achieved
the greatest savings in energy were issued a limited
edition ring embossed with the Lukens corporation logo.
The company newspaper attributed dramatic
reductions in energy use and substantial dollar savings
to the energy conservation program. More specifically,
the program surpassed the goal by 36 billion BTUs and
resulted in a savings of $2.6 million in wasted energy.
